Koyasan (Mt. Koya) is one of the sacred place of Buddhism developed by Kukai in AD816. The small secluded town registered as a world heritage site in 2004 has divers national treasures and more than 110 temples nowadays.
Kukai 774 - 835AD

Kukai, also known as Koubou Daishi, is one of the most significant person in Japanese Buddhism. With imperial license, he founded Shingon sect which is one of the in 13 major sects.

804 - Went to Chang'an as a monk and mastered Esoteric Buddhism in 2 years.

816 - Developed Koyasan with imperial license from 52nd emperor: Saga Tennou.

823 - Entrusted Toji(a temple in Kyoto) by the emperor.
